Peggy Delorah Hunter

Born in McCurtain County in Southeastern Oklahoma, Peggy Delorah Beck was born on April 6, 1938, in a log cabin in a small rural community called Crosslanes.  She passed away on September 2, 2026.  The last surviving child of Clara and Bill Beck, Peggy had five sisters and one brother.  Growing up in a small, farming community with occasional moves to California, Peggy often spoke of her childhood as living in a kind of time of warp where all families knew each other.  The children attended a one-room schoolhouse with her own mother as the teacher, all the children were accountable to the adults, and the community was steeped in old fashioned storytelling, get togethers, and customs.  She often said that she wouldn’t trade her childhood for anything.

Peggy was the first of her siblings to attend college when she enrolled at Northeastern University; and it was here where she met her future husband, Norman Hunter.  They married in 1985 before finishing college, but that didn’t stop her from getting her degree.  Working as the librarian at Okmulgee Public Library, Peggy returned to The University of Tulsa to get her bachelor’s degree and later Oklahoma State University to earn her master’s degree.  Peggy taught in Okmulgee Public Schools as an elementary teacher before moving to Sapulpa where she taught and then moved into the position of school librarian.  In Sapulpa, she was instrumental in converting several school libraries from the old car catalog systems to automation and digitization.  Upon retiring, she worked part time at the School of St. Mary in Tulsa as the school librarian where she also brought the library into the modern era.  Peggy played an integral part supporting her husband Norman in the opening of the family RV dealership, Hunter RV, in Sapulpa, Oklahoma.  An avid reader and traveler, she and Norman spent many happy times attending dealer conferences, trips abroad, and traveling in a motorhome prior to Norman’s death in 2007.

In her final chapter of life, she loved spending several summers with her sisters in her cabin in Red River, New Mexico.  She also enjoyed time at the cabin with her immediate family, including her great granddaughter, Kate.  These trips were full of jigsaw puzzles, handheld solitare, and Peggy’s incredible cooking.  Feeding people was always her love language.  Peggy is survived by her daughter, Lesa Dickson; son-in-law, Jim Dickson; granddaughter, Elizabeth Scott; grandson-in-law, Cooper Scott; and great granddaughter, Kate Scott, along with may nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life memorial will be held from 2:00-3:00 p.m on Friday, September 11, 2026, at the Church of St. Mary Parish Hall, 1347 E. 49th Place, Tulsa, OK.
