Obituary
LaVerne Baxter was called home to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 23, 2016 at the age of 82. She is preceded in death by her parents, Oran and Katholee Mayfield; her husband of 43 years, Arvel Lee Baxter; and two brothers, Don Mayfield of McLoud, OK and Dean Mayfield of Tulsa, OK. She is survived by her sister, Vanita Hardwick; her daughters, Donna Ashlock and Kay Tiger; 4 grandchildren, Dr. Justin Ashlock, Waco Ashlock, Cale Ashlock and Lara Tiger; and 11 great grandchildren.
Oran LaVerne Baxter (lovingly known as Pugin and called Muner by her grandchildren) was born on November 2, 1933 in Spaulding, OK to Oran & Katholee Mayfield. She attended Holdenville High School where she was a cheerleader and basketball queen. She was married to the love of her life, Arvel Lee Baxter on March 7, 1952. They moved to Tulsa when her daughters started school and was actively involved in their lives from birth into adulthood. She was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker delighting in the joys of her family. LaVerne enjoyed O.U. Football, making candy, fudge and being surrounded by her family; especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. LaVerne, our Muner, was a kind, patient, Christian woman who showed us all the true meaning of family.

LaVerne will lie in state from 11-8 p.m. Thursday at the Ninde Brookside Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday at the Carbondale Church of Christ. She will be laid to rest at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Dearest Kay and Donna, I am so saddened to hear of your momma's passing. I truly loved her very much and she had a great impact on my life during junior high school. She was always doting over me when I was in Pom and Cheer with you Kay.....she made sure I was having fun and kind of become a mother hen for me.....I was so shy and always felt awkward around everyone but she made sure I was part of the squad or dance team. She was truly a fine woman and very loving to all of us girls. I will fondly remember those times and her. I am thankful God placed her in my life and that I was able to learn from her example. I became a cheer sponser when my girls were in cheer and I know she was a great influence on how I handled the group. I was always welcome at your home and both of your parents treated me like family. What a blessing in my life. God Bless each of you and your family members as you walk this unexpected journey. Kay, Donna & Lara - I was so very sorry to hear about your Mom & Grandmother. She was such a wonderful person - always so kind to me. I will always remember her, especially when she had to deal with us during our cheerleading years. What patience she had. She always had a smile, a laugh, something positive to say - an encouraging voice at a time in our lives when that was so important to us. I will be praying for your family.
