Mary Louise Young

Mary Louise Young

Obituary

Mary Louise Young of Tulsa, OK passed away peacefully on July 4, 2024, surrounded by her loved ones.  She was born July 21, 1939, in Peoria, IL to Helen Louise (Held) Ellison and Richard White Ellison. Her family moved to Tulsa when her father was offered a position with Service Pipeline Company.

Mary loved ballet and from elementary through high school studied under Eva Matlagova-Larkin, a Russian dancer. Eva's daughter Moscelyne was one the five famed Native American ballerinas who were known internationally as the Five Moons.  Mary had fond memories of spending her summers at the family farm in Lacon, IL with her beloved grandparents, affectionally known as Mamo and Papo.  She was a graduate of Central High School and attended the University of Tulsa where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta.  Mary was a great storyteller and loved hosting dinner parties for friends and family.  She spent most of her career in the art business in Santa Fe and Tulsa. She excelled in selling a diverse range of artwork to individual and corporate clients.

She was an avid reader, loved poetry, classical music (especially Gustav Mahler), and the Tulsa Ballet. But what she really loved was the simple joy of thrift store shopping. She thought of it as a treasure hunt, always looking for hidden gems and where each visit was a new adventure.  Mary was a natural beauty with an impeccable sense of style and grace. She was compassionate, intelligent, funny, and was always there to lend an ear and offer a helping hand. She will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Roberta Marder (2022) and son Stephen Andrew Young (2024).  She is survived by her loving partner of 32 years, Joseph Gierek; son Douglas Young (Cindy) of Pike Road, AL; daughter Virginia Godwin (Jim) of Alpharetta, GA; brothers George Ellison (Susan) of Eufaula, OK and Michael Ellison of Taos, NM; sisters Carol Fleming of Santa Fe, NM and Catherine Rychel (David Blakemore) of Tulsa; grandchildren Riley, Alexander, Rachel and Benjamin; nieces, nephews and dear friends.

The family is very grateful for the exceptional care provided to her by the staff of Miller Hospice; to Fred Garfinkel for his never-ending support; and to John Reaves for his friendship and generosity.

A Memorial Service will take place on Friday, April 4, at 1:00 pm, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 501 S. Cincinnati Ave.  A Celebration of Life will take place on Sunday, April 6, from 1:00-4:00 pm, at Joseph Gierek Fine Art, 1342 E. 11th Street.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Miller Hospice, 6950 S. Utica Ave, Tulsa, OK 74136, (918) 742-6415, or the charity of your choice.

Mary was my first friend when I moved to Tulsa. We met at that great little shop Brenda had on 41st St. She promptly sold me a menorah even though I'm not Jewish. I still have it to this day and I think of Mary every time I look at it. It' s true what Fran said , she was always "freshening up" things with a coat of paint and as we know she did love to shop but only if it was a "bargain". Mary would drive all way across town to save a dollar on protein bars. And it didn't matter one bit that they were 6 months past the "sell by" date. "Oh, I'm sure their fine," she would always say. Mary's dinner parties were the best. Those evenings were so special and I would give anything to sit at her table just one more time with a glass of red wine and her spinach lasagna. I miss her so much. She was good friend who was kind and caring and just plain fun to be with. No one will ever replace our Mary.

Mary Young — Forever “Do not go gentle into that good night.” Dear Mary, you always were a fighter and still arch over us weaker ones, providing food and shelter and words of wisdom. You were often ridiculous: painting the kitchen cabinets black then blue then white; scraping the wood floor, using chemicals that knocked you out. You always knocked us out with your generosity and good sense (despite a few malapropisms). Oh how we laughed during our single days: the guys who pursued you, the inescapable lure of your good humor and beauty. And then there came Joe, the man you needed, respected and kept close. Always Joe who treated Steven like a brother, brought love and stunning art to home and gallery, knew instinctively how to make a dusty van into a comfortable transport for Manly so he could ride in glory to the peace and dignity of Clarehouse and the woods he knew and loved. And you, you tucked me in with fluffy quilts in Tulsa, Los Angeles, New York City where, at first sight of the slums — you found them “interesting” even “charming” never shunning the destitute and down trodden. You danced at the first Cafe´-Bar on the North side, and when “called to the Bar” never flinched. You romped through Judith Anderson playing Hamlet (a horror worse than the Witches of Endor.) But Birnam Wood comes for us all — in disguise or in a naked thrust to the chest — even while, with weakened breadth, you still blast Trump and all injustice. And so we follow you, not gently but shouting: This is not fair! This will never do to lose so quickly so good a young friend! All my love, Fran Ringold

Mary represents all that is good in this world - and memories of her remind me to be like her. She was a thoughtful and caring friend I will never forget! My thoughts are with Mary's beloved family now and I hope my heart light provides some small comfort now. Love to you all ~Joy

I met Mary when I was 15 and had become friends with Cathy. When my ex husband went to Viet Nam, I rented an apartment not far from her house. Mary (and Tommy) always kept the welcome mat out for me to visit. We spent many lovely evenings enjoying wine together. Mary was beautiful, gracious and fun. Of course I would see her through the years at parties and it was always a joy to see her. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
