Justin Spencer Benner

On February 17, 1977 in Houston, Texas, a bright-eyed baby Justin was born to Jodie K. (Tronson) Benner and Dr. Benjamin G. Benner.  A vivacious, towheaded, little boy, he won hearts with his blue eyes and engaging personality. He was inquisitive, cheerful and full of energy.  Whether he was horseback riding, rock climbing, snow skiing, camping or hunting, Justin loved being outdoors and loved being active. He was known for coming up with great ideas and for concocting adventurous escapades with his friends.

Justin graduated Cascia Hall in the Class of 1996 and maintained the life-long friendships he made there. After graduation he furthered his education in a variety of fields. He initially studied engineering and math, which were some of his strongest subjects. Then he opted for more hands-on undertakings, like welding, paramedic training and finally culinary school. That was a fit.

Justin had far-reaching interests, from linebacker to line chef. But of all of his varied pursuits, he loved cooking the most. He earned an associate’s degree in culinary science from OSU School of Culinary Arts. He was in his element in the kitchen. Food preparation allowed him to express his love and creativity. Serving beautiful meals to appreciative diners was his jam.

Justin could not ignore his creative instincts. He saw possibilities in a piece of drift wood that others would walk by. He could convert pieces into beautiful or useful designs. It was the same with the people in his life. He had a way of seeing and fostering the best in all of us.

All of these pursuits kept Justin engaged and fulfilled. He had a way of making those of us around him feel energized, too. He could see possibilities in unexpected places, and he stretched us to see them with him. His innate optimism gave Justin the confidence to fearlessly try his hand at any challenge or project that piqued his curiosity. He had an effervescent personality.  For many of us, to know him was to love him. Justin showed us how a generous human behaves. He was a warm and giving man. We are blessed to have known him.

Justin is survived by his parents, Jodie and Ben Benner of Tulsa, his sister, Christine Benner and brother-in-law, Daniel Worley of Oklahoma City.  He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Merle and Melanie Benner and Joseph and Viola Tronson.

Celebration of Life Service will be held 4:00 p.m. Friday, October 3 at The Church of St. Mary in Tulsa, with Fr. Stuart Crevcoure officiating.
