Bates, JB, 92, died at his home on Wednesday, December 17, 2008. He was born June 13, 1916 in Leonard, Oklahoma the son of Apson and Minnie (Kirkendall) Bates. He was preceded in death by his parents and a step-daughter, Bessie Jo Harper. He is survived by his wife Octavia McAshan Bates; daughters: Pearl Bates Thomas, Brenda Bates Marks and Stephanie Bates; his sons: Rev. Eugene Earl McAshan, Stonney Bates and J.B. Bates, Jr.; daughter-in-law: Verina Thomas; sister: Roxanna Bates Bell; Seventeen Grandchildren, numerous great Grandchildren and several great, great Grandchildren. Home Going celebration will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 20th in the St. Paul A.M.E. Church, 648 E. 46th Street North. Interment will be at 1:00 p.m. in the Haskell City Cemetery.
