Obituary
Hugh Blaine Davis, affectionately known by Blaine, passed away on June 10, 2026 at the age of 84. Blaine lived a life defined by service, friendship, and a deep love for his family, community, and nature. A proud USAF veteran and retired police officer, he dedicated much of his life to serving others with honor, integrity, and compassion.
As the son of Hugh and Zelta Davis, creators of the world-known Blue Whale of Catoosa, Blaine was a direct link to one of Route 66’s most cherished landmarks. He proudly carried forward his family’s legacy, becoming a passionate advocate for Route 66 tourism and preservation. Through his work at the Blue Whale and his countless interactions with visitors from around the world, he helped keep the spirit and history of the Mother Road alive for future generations. His dedication earned him induction into the Route 66 Hall of Fame, alongside both of his parents, a fitting recognition of his lifelong commitment to his community.
Blaine never met a stranger. Whether greeting visitors at the Whale, serving as a park host at one of the many state parks he visited, or simply striking up a conversation with someone he had just met, he had a remarkable ability to make people feel welcomed. His warmth, humor, and genuine interest in others created friendships that spanned generations and countless miles.
A devoted Mason and Shriner, Blaine embraced the principles of brotherhood, charity, and service throughout his life. He valued the friendships he made through these organizations and took pride in supporting their mission of helping others. Above all, Blaine loved his family. He treasured time spent with those closest to him and took great pride in sharing their lives and accomplishments.
Blaine is preceded in death by his parents Hugh and Zelta Davis, and his sister DeeDee Belt. He is survived by his son John and wife Ellen Davis and son Paul Davis and Angel Grubb; Granddaughters, Ashley Davis, Tiffani and Wes Blair, Chelsea and DJ Chaney, Katie Davis, and Brinlee Nolan; and five Great Grandchildren, who brought him immeasurable joy.
Blaine’s legacy lives on in the family he loved, the friendships he cultivated, and the countless travelers and community members who’s lives he touched. His welcoming spirit, dedication to service, and his passion for his community will be remembered for years to come. A Celebration of Life will be held for friends to gather, share memories, and celebrate the extraordinary life of a man whose kindness left a lasting impression on everyone he met. Some really good memories of as we dated for about four years. I met him while he was hosting at Camp Doris in the Wichita wildlife Refuge. We became friends and so much more after that. He invited me to Texana State Park and I got to go for two weeks and we had such a good time and I helped him do hosting and he showed me many wonderful things in that area in Texas. Later he came back to camp Doris and I helped him host and clean up campsites and so much more there. I loved his stories about his dad and the zoo as well as the blue whale and Catoosa. He and his sons put together a kayak trailer for me and even put wood on the top so that I could use it to carry camping things as well. I am so thankful for him and his family for all their kindness and love. Blaine loved his family and talked about them quite frequently.I am saddened to hear about his death.❤️

Thank you for always allowing Aj and I to fish at the whale before it got reopened to the public. You always said if anyone said we couldn't be there to tell them our grandpa said it was okay. You are going to be missed dearly!! God bless !

Blaine was certainly one of a kind!! He loved and took ownership of Lake Texana State Park long before we (LNRA) did! I think all of the Park Hosts that came “with the Park” were a bit wary of all of us as we took over. I remember that first public meeting! Thankfully we all became like family and worked together to make Texana Park what it is today! Thank you for your many, many hours of work and dedication. Mr. Blaine was a nice and hard working man! I met him at the Brackenridge and Texana Park in Edna, Texas. I was working there and was the BRC Maintenance Director and my name is Nick! He loved driving the John Deere Gator ATV around the parks visiting with the campers and working cleaning up the trails was his thing he liked doing the most. He definitely loved his coffee. He always stayed busy and liked giving me and the other guys a hard time. He definitely will be missed.

Blaine was a legendary man whom I am blessed to have known, even if only for a short time. He was the sweetest person and took pride in everything he did. I loved drinking coffee with him and hearing all about his life and the places he had traveled. Blaine was very sharp, witty, and fun to talk to. It was obvious how much he loved his family from the way he bragged about them. Blaine dedicated himself fully to anything he was a part of. My coworkers and I miss him dearly. Blaine was truly larger than life, and I am better for having known him.
