Clara Higgins

Clara Maxine (Peck) Higgins passed away Wednesday, May 11, 2011 in Anchorage, Alaska. She was 89. Clara was born in Goltry, OK on 7/27/21 to Clayton and Anna "Louie" Peck. She graduated from Jet High School. She then obtained her Cosmetology license and worked briefly as a beautician before marrying Robert King Higgins and moving to Tulsa, OK in 1943.

Clara worked alongside her husband at their upholstery shop, Higgins Upholstery, until his death in 1971. She was well known for her masterful work and attention to detail. Clara continued to run Higgins Upholstery until her retirement in 2000.

Clara was very active in her church. She was a member of Sequoyah Hills Baptist Church and Cavalry Baptist Church. She taught Vacation Bible School and was active in the Layman's Outreach Programs. Her strong faith and love of Jesus carried her through many challenging times.

Clara enjoyed crafts of all kinds and operated a home-based craft shop, selling handmade pillows, dolls and home décor items during the mid 1960s. During her later years, she channeled her crafting passion into creating greeting cards. She sent hundreds of uniquely beautiful cards to friends and family members over the years.

Clara loved to travel and took many church sponsored trips as well as trips with her friends. Although she had no biologic children, she raised Lisa and Mike Pack as her own, and made frequent extended visits to Lisa in Alaska. In 2002, Clara moved to Alaska permanently to live with Lisa (Pack) Weston and her family. Clara was an adventurous spirit and loved flightseeing from small aircraft. She was proud to say that she had walked on Mount McKinley after landing on Ruth Glacier. She loved the mountains of Alaska and once said " I don't understand how someone could not believe in God when surrounded by all this beauty".

She was known for never saying an unkind word about anyone under any circumstance, her loving nature, and her sense of humor.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Mina Eileen Peck, and her husband Robert "King" Higgins.

She is survived by her sisters Margery Jean (Peck) Shorter, Martha "Louise" (Peck) Stepp, nieces Cynthia Bough, Edana Caldwell, Sherry Fulbright, Kathy Stepp, Anna Stepp and Sharon Davis, and nephew Terry Shorter, many great nieces and nephews and 2 great-great nephews, special friends Lisa, Russ and Zoe Weston, and many other dear friends from Oklahoma to Alaska.
